Kish Qanat

Light begins at the surface and gradually penetrates beneath the skin of the earth. It does not descend as a clear beam, but passes slowly through matter, losing definition as it moves deeper underground. Layer after layer absorbs and transmits it until the light finally reaches the lowest depth. There, instead of disappearing, it rebounds and begins to illuminate the subterranean space from within. Darkness is no longer simply the absence of light, but a material through which light has traveled. The underground chamber becomes connected to the surface by an invisible passage of energy: descent, absorption, reflection, and return. What appears to be an enclosed world beneath the earth is therefore not entirely separate from what exists above. Light crosses the boundary between them, revealing a hidden continuity between surface and depth, and transforming the underground into a space that seems to generate its own illumination.
