From Reality to Parallel Worlds

My work is based on digital photographic collage, combining multiple photographs of real places into complex, multilayered compositions. In my City series, I work exclusively with photographs taken at the same location, capturing architecture, streets, water, reflections, and fragments of the urban environment. Using Photoshop, I construct images through extensive layering, blending modes, selective transparency, erasure, and spatial reconfiguration. Through this process, familiar urban spaces are transformed into environments that could not physically exist.

This method produces a fundamental contradiction: every element originates in reality, yet the resulting world has never existed. Photography retains its documentary credibility even as the spatial relationships within the image become increasingly unstable. Different moments coexist, reflections emerge in impossible locations, and architectural structures take on unfamiliar relationships. The distinction between photographic evidence and constructed reality becomes uncertain.

Light is equally fundamental to my approach. Rather than merely reproducing the illumination recorded by the camera, I generate new luminosity through the additive interaction of RGB colors across multiple photographic layers. This process allows light to emerge from within the composition, creating visual conditions that were absent from the original photographs. Light becomes an active element in the reconstruction of space.

My earlier City works explored the accumulation, fragmentation, and transformation of urban memory. More recently, my focus has shifted toward the creation of parallel worlds through spatial and temporal displacement. Familiar places retain recognizable elements, but their conventional relationships are disrupted, transforming ordinary urban reality into something extraordinary.

Unlike an imagined fantasy constructed from invented elements, these parallel worlds emerge entirely from existing reality. I do not begin with a predetermined vision of an alternative world. Instead, the process of recomposing photographic fragments reveals spatial possibilities that could not exist in the original setting.

My intention is to create works that possess an immediate visual presence while challenging established perceptions of space, time, and reality. The resulting images remain grounded in the familiar, yet present a world that is fundamentally unfamiliar.

ARTISTIC PRACTICE
Professional fine-art practice established in 2024. Oda creates mixed-media photographic collages from original photographs, digitally reconstructing color, transparency, light, and material structure. His current Mineral series examines matter, water, mineral formations, erosion, sediment, and reflected light through layered photographic abstraction.

Biography

Yasuo Oda is a Washington, D.C.–based Japanese artist whose professional fine-art practice began in 2024. Working from his own photographs, he creates mixed-media photographic collages through a process of digital reconstruction, layering, and additive color. His images move beyond conventional photographic representation to examine light, transparency, matter, and spatial depth.

His current Mineral series focuses on water, stone, sediment, erosion, mineral formations, and reflected light. Rather than depicting identifiable landscapes, the works isolate physical structures and transform them into ambiguous fields in which scale and material remain uncertain. The resulting images retain a photographic origin while approaching abstraction through accumulated layers of observed matter.

Oda trained as an architect in Japan and the United States. He received a Master of Architecture from Waseda University and, as a Fulbright Scholar, a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. His architectural background informs his interest in structure, proportion, material, and the organization of visual space. He held his first solo exhibition at Gallery Doujunkai in Omotesando, Tokyo, in 2024, followed by juried exhibition and recognition in the United States.
