Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto is one of the three Munakata goddesses, governing maritime safety and the virtues of water. Born from the covenant between Amaterasu and Susanoo, she is a goddess of beauty and fertility who washes away all stagnation, much like a pure, flowing river.

Artist Commentary

Tagorihime-no-mikoto resides at the intersection of myth and the natural world. As the eldest of the Munakata Sanjoshin, she was manifested through a sacred ritual between the sun goddess Amaterasu and the storm god Susanoo. Enshrined at Okitsumiya on the secluded island of Okinoshima, she represents the divine protection of Japan’s maritime borders and the safety of those who traverse the deep.

The visual language of this piece reflects her name, which translates to the Mist Maiden. By utilizing fluid textures and a radiant, diffused light source, the work mirrors the atmospheric transition between the sea and the heavens. It explores the duality of her nature: the calm, guiding light of a beacon and the impenetrable mystery of the ocean fog. Through this abstraction, the piece seeks to connect the viewer with the ancient, enduring spirit of a goddess who remains a vital guardian of the seas.
