Biography
Yasuo Oda is a Washington, D.C.–based Japanese artist whose professional fine-art practice began in 2024. Working from his own photographs, he creates mixed-media photographic collages through a process of digital reconstruction, layering, and additive color. His images move beyond conventional photographic representation to examine light, transparency, matter, and spatial depth.
His current Mineral series focuses on water, stone, sediment, erosion, mineral formations, and reflected light. Rather than depicting identifiable landscapes, the works isolate physical structures and transform them into ambiguous fields in which scale and material remain uncertain. The resulting images retain a photographic origin while approaching abstraction through accumulated layers of observed matter.
Oda trained as an architect in Japan and the United States. He received a Master of Architecture from Waseda University and, as a Fulbright Scholar, a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. His architectural background informs his interest in structure, proportion, material, and the organization of visual space. He held his first solo exhibition at Gallery Doujunkai in Omotesando, Tokyo, in 2024, followed by juried exhibition and recognition in the United States.
