Valahnúkamöl

Centered on Valahnúkamöl in southwestern Iceland, this work collages natural landscapes from the surrounding area. Iceland’s vastness, isolation, and quiet desolation remain central, while clear and cloudy conditions coexist and a distorted moon unsettles any single moment of observation.

Sea and sky remain recognizable above and below, yet between them a broad cyan field resists definition. The horizon seems to split open, allowing another realm to appear between the two familiar elements. It may suggest a space beyond ordinary reality, perhaps even evoking nirvana, without fixing that interpretation.

The offshore rocks remain as anchors to the physical place, while surrounding forms dissolve and overlap. Rather than forcing Icelandic nature into an urban structure, the work preserves the character of Valahnúkamöl while extending the series’ language of dissolution, memory, and layering. A real landscape becomes unstable, opening a space where perception, memory, and imagination can coexist without losing its physical presence.
