I painted water flowing beneath the ground—water moving like a hidden mineral vein. It cannot be seen from the surface; this is a picture that looks through the earth. A concealed current that normally leaves no trace breaks through the surface here for only an instant and reveals itself. The image holds that moment when the invisible becomes visible.

Water that sustains life. In Lourdes, in southwestern France, spring water is known as miraculous water that heals the sick. This work expresses the energy such water is believed to hold. It neither bursts nor strikes; it permeates and quietly fills whatever it touches. I depict matter that carries life within it.
